How PillSense™ is transforming upper GI bleed detection and optimizing patient management

Did you know that each year more than half a million patients are admitted for gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding?1,2 That’s six to seven percent of all hospital admissions,1,2 each of which is associated with a cost. However, a recent retrospective analysis also found that 66% of patients who are admitted with suspected upper GI bleeds show no intraluminal blood during endoscopy.3

Challenges with current methods

Today, diagnosing an upper GI bleed may involve a combination of clinical scores, such as the Glasgow-Blatchford score, nasogastric tube lavage, and laboratory tests. Current methods often require a specialist, can be invasive and uncomfortable for patients, and are not always immediately available, which can potentially delay treatment.

Accurate results in 10 minutes or less

The PillSense GI Bleed Detection System offers an additional tool for diagnosing upper GI bleeding. PillSense is the first FDA-approved, ingestible blood-detection system that rapidly and accurately4 detects upper GI bleeding using light absorption technology.

It provides a simple and definitive “Blood Detected” or “No Blood Detected” result in less than 10 minutes, without requiring image or data interpretation by a specialized professional. This fast, accurate4 diagnostic tool is designed to detect blood in the upper GI tract for adult patients who are hemodynamically stable but are suspected of having upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB).

PillSense advantages

PillSense can be administered by a nurse or technician without any specialized training, and no patient preparation is required. This rapid diagnostic capability allows you to efficiently triage and prioritize patients—confirming bleeds in hemodynamically stable patients. It’s designed to enhance your risk stratification and decision making for a more efficient use of critical resources.

Clinically proven accuracy

A clinical study demonstrated PillSense was able to detect upper GI bleeding with 93% sensitivity and 91% specificity.4  PillSense was accurate in identifying blood from esophageal, gastric, and duodenal sources.

How PillSense works

First, the single-use, ingestible capsule is paired wirelessly to the reusable, handheld receiver. Second, the patient swallows the capsule, which is equipped with an optical sensor to detect blood. Third, the capsule transmits real-time diagnostic results to the receiver in under 10 minutes, with no image interpretation needed.

A first-line diagnostic tool to optimize your patient management
PillSense is designed to provide actionable results in minutes, empowering you to expedite decision making and manage patient care with confidence.
