At the 2015 SIR scientific meeting, Robert J. Lewandowski, MD, FSIR, presented an update on degradable drug-eluting particles.
According to Dr. Lewandowski, “The next generation of degradable embolic particles offers an enticing advancement for interventional radiologists. Patients (and referring physicians) will no doubt find it appealing to mitigate long-term/lifelong foreign body implantation.
“Regardless of improved outcomes, this will be appealing. The concept of biodegradability offers the potential promise of decreased inflammation, less pain, and improved vascular patency rates. From an interventional oncology standpoint, this has the possibility of improving outcomes through better and more complete controlled drug release. Of course, all of this will need to be substantiated.”
