Nelson L. Bernardo, MD, specializes in interventional cardiology and teaches a course for Vista on retrograde tibiopedal access. Dr. Bernardo is the medical director of the Peripheral Vascular Laboratory at MedStar Heart Institute. He is also the director for Peripheral Intervention at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at MedStar Research Institute. Dr. Bernardo serves as the co-chair for cardiac peripheral vascular diseases.
After completing his education at the Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, Dr. Bernardo joined the Salem (Virginia) VA Medical Center to set up peripheral and coronary intervention programs. He then returned to the faculty at the Richmond VAMC and VCU/MCV School of Medicine to start a peripheral interventional program and establish a training curriculum in conjunction with the cardiology fellowship program.In July 2006, Dr. Bernardo joined the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
Besides his clinical and teaching duties in the catheterization laboratory and outpatient clinic, Dr. Bernardo’s research interests include treatment strategies
for peripheral arterial disease. Specifically, he focuses on chronic total occlusions and critical limb ischemia. Dr. Bernardo is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in interventional cardiology.
